The 58-year-old woman, whose name has been permanently suppressed to protect her victims, was sentenced in the Wellington District Court this morning on assault charges.

The older girl was also hit with a metal strap after the woman discovered her on a trampoline with her boyfriend early one morning last year.

Judge Chris Tuohy said the woman had devoted eight years of her life to bringing up the girls and, apart from the matters before the court, there was nothing to show she had done anything other than a good job.

He convicted and discharged her, saying given the circumstances, and the fact she had voluntarily done community work, there was no need to impose further punishment.
