Rock art experts want protection for Sahara paintings

06:00 am on 25 October 2010

International experts in rock art have appealed for proper protection to be given to cave paintings and stone carvings in the Sahara Desert.

They have been meeting in the town of Samara in western Sahara and say unless effective solutions are found to protect work from vandalism and looting, an important window on human history may be lost.

Rock art is scattered across the Sahara and is still being found.
