Vanuatu PM indicates Solomons to host next MSG summit

20:12 pm on 6 October 2010

The Vanuatu prime minister, Edward Natapei, says there is hope that Solomon Islands will host the summit of the leaders of the Melanesian Spearhead Group before the end of the year.

Mr Natapei made the comment on return from the United Nations general assembly in New York.

He says negotiations are underway with member countries for the government of Solomon Islands to host the MSG summit.

Fiji was supposed to host this year's summit in July but it was cancelled at the last minute by Mr Natapei who is the MSG chair.

Although Fiji is still an active member it is not clear if it will attend the summit in Solomon Islands.

Under the MSG constitution, the host country automatically holds the chairmanship until the next summit.
