Between 15 and 20 volunteers each day this week have been helping clean up rubbish from the banks of the Fox River on the West Coast.
The old Fox River landfill burst open during the West Coast floods in March this year, and last week the Department of Conservation said it would take charge of the clean up.
The Department of Conservation has made a call for volunteers to help with the work, with the offer of free accommodation, and lunch and dinner.
DOC communications advisor Jose Watson said they already had 28 people signed up to help this Saturday, and 20 for Sunday, but would still need many more volunteers in the weeks to come.
Ms Watson said most of the volunteers so far had been locals, but they have had visiting tourists helping along with people who have travelled from the North Island specifically to help.
