Carrington and Hoskin also won their K2 500m heat, moving on to the semi-finals.

The men's teams also made a strong performance, although both the K4 500m team consisting of Max Brown, Grant Clancy, Kurtis Imrie and Hamish Legarth and the K2 500m of Hamish Legarth and Kurtis Imrie, had to battle it out in the quarter-finals to advance to the semi-finals.

First-time Olympian middle-distance runner Maia Ramsden is through to the semi-final of the 1500m after coming sixth in her heat.

Climber Julian David made two personal best times in sport climbing, clinching 5.24 seconds in the first round, only to beat that in the elimination heat with a time of 5.20, defeating Iran's Reza Ali Pour.
