First batch of LNG pipes arrives

11:09 am on 9 November 2010

The first shipment of LNG pipes has been offloaded at the Gulf of Papua.

The National reports the 850 kilometre onshore and offshore pipeline will transport gas from Papua New Guinea's Southern Highlands and Western provinces to the two LNG train facilities near Port Moresby where it will be processed.

From there, it will be shipped to major customers in China, Japan and Taiwan.

The State Enterprises Minister, Arthur Somare, says he is pleased the landmark PNG LNG project has been making steady progress since the final investment decision was taken last December with substantial work being undertaken throughout the LNG project footprint area.

He says the construction phase and ongoing operations will help grow the PNG economy.
