An association representing Auckland school principals says it is worried at moves by seven leading sporting schools to set up a breakaway elite competition for rugby and soccer.
Auckland Secondary Schools Heads Association chairman, MacLeans College principal Byron Bentley, says the schools have met twice in secret to discuss the move, which he says threatens long-running Auckland competitions.
Mr Bentley believes the schools are Auckland Grammar, Kelston Boys High, St Kentigern College, Sacred Heart, Westlake Boys High, Mt Albert Grammar and Kings College.
He told Nine to Noon other schools are worried. "They're concerned that this has the potential to wreck the competitions at premier level. You take those teams out; it leaves a huge hole."
Mt Albert Grammar principal Dale Burden says a meeting on Friday between headmasters was not about anything specific.
He says it was more about sporting excellence in general.
