Te Arawa has lost one of its great leaders, Pihopa Kingi of Ngāti Whakaue, a rangatira for his hapū who died yesterday age 88.
Mr Kingi, was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1999 and a Companion of the Queen's Service Order for his services to Te Arawa iwi in 2009.
Whānau spokesperson Monty Morrison, Mr Kingi's cousin, said he was a hard worker but will be remembered for his work on the marae in Ohinemutu and the numerous iwi trusts he was part of.
Mr Morrison said Mr Kingi was a true servant to his iwi and was revered by many throughout the country.
"Because of his inclusive personality and his wisdom he was often called on by many people for help."
Pihopa Kingi will be taken to Te Papaiouru Marae in Rotorua on Thursday and his funeral will be on Sunday.
