Emergency services say a report of a small plane crash near Whangamatā on the Coromandel Peninsula appears to have been a false alarm.

A caller reported seeing a plane in trouble shortly after 10am.
Police and ambulance helicopters were sent to Tairua Road in Hikuai, but officers now believe it was a topdressing plane working in the area.
