New Caledonia ex-cop jailed for assaulting handcuffed suspect

A former senior police officer in New Caledonia has been given a three-year jail sentence for assaulting a handcuffed suspect.

Two of the three years are suspended.

The criminal court also found him guilty of forging the incident report.

The Nouvelles Caledoniennes said in 2013 the unnamed officer was involved in the pursuit of a young man, who, in a drunken state, had sped away in his car, but crashed it.

The court also ordered the officer to pay the assault victim $US7000.
