Fiji government party set for emergency meeting after cabinet minister jailed

09:41 am on 5 April 2005

The junior partner in Fiji's coalition government, the pro-coup Conservative Alliance Matanitu Vanua, will hold an emergency meeting today following the jailing of two senior party members.

The party's parliamentary leader and lands minister, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, and its general secretary and government senator, Ratu Josefa Dimuri, have been jailed for eight months for their role in the Labasa army mutiny during the 2000 coup.

Radio Legend quotes the acting leader of the Conservative Alliance and George Speight's brother, Samisoni Tikonisau, as saying they will meet today to discuss the issue.

Meanwhile, the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, has sought legal advice from the State Law Office on the legal implications of the jailing of his cabinet minister.

The chief executive of the prime minister's Office, Jioji Kotobalavu, says once he is briefed, Mr Qarase will decide what to do.

The former chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, says the decision of the courts must be respected.

Lalabalavu, Dimuri and two other Vanua Levu chiefs, one of them a member of the Great Council of Chiefs, have been jailed for eight months for illegal assembly, at the Sukanaivalu Barracks during the army mutiny there.

Magistrate Sunil Kumar said instead of using their position to diffuse the situation, they played a leading role in influencing the rebel soldiers to act criminally.

He blamed the takeover of the Labasa police station, and the beating up of police officers and loyal soldiers and the suffering of their wives and children on the four chiefs.

All four are serving their prison sentence in Labasa jail with the Police Tactical Response Unit present in the Vanua Levu town to quell any disturbances.
