The first chief executive of the Government's Health Quality and Safety Commission has been appointed.

Janice Wilson, the deputy director-general of population health at the Ministry of Health, will take up the role in February.

The commission is chaired by Auckland anaesthetist Professor Alan Merry and was set up last year to lead improvements in the quality and safety of health and disability services.

Dr Wilson, a psychiatrist, is a former director of mental health and has extensive experience in mental health and other health roles.
