The New Plymouth District Council is to seek a meeting with KiwiRail on how to improve safety at level crossings on its popular coastal walkway.
A 27-year-old New Plymouth man, Matthew Meijer, was hit and killed by a train at a crossing in the city on Monday.
The police said it appeared he was wearing headphones and did not hear the train when it sounded its horn.
Council chief executive Barbara McKerrow said it would be premature to suggest any new safety options at this stage and any changes would need to be carefully thought through.
KiwiRail owns the rail corridor and any crossing alterations require its agreement.
Ms McKerrow said KiwiRail had approved the design of the current crossings.
