The next stage of gun law reform which will introduce a firearms register and new penalties has passed its first reading. In April a law banning military style semi-automatic weapons and parts passed with near unanimous support in the wake of the March 15 Christchurch mosque attacks, where 51 people died.

The National Party joined forces with the government back then. However, Parliament is once again divided on the second tranche with the Opposition pulling its support.

RNZ political reporter, Jo Moir, watched the debate.
