A solar power station on Mitiaro in the southern Cook Islands is being opened this week.

The station is the first of four solar stations being built in the south as part of the Southern Renewable Energy Project and follows the implementation of a similar scheme in the northern islands.

The other southern islands of Mauke, Atiu and Mangaia are expected to have solar systems in place by July.

The Cook Islands News said the project had been financed by grants from the European Union and the Global Environment Facility, Japan's Pacific Environment Community funds and loans from the Asian Development Bank.

The next phase of the project is to increase the use of solar-generated electricity on Aitutaka and Rarotonga.
