The White Ferns have been beaten by 59 runs by India in the opening ODI in Ahmedabad.

After deciding to bat first India were dismissed for 227 in the 44th over with the Kerr sisters leading the way with seven wickets between them.

Amelia Kerr took four for 42 from nine overs, while Jess Kerr took three for 49 from 8.3 overs.

Tejal Hasabnis top scored for India with 42.

In reply New Zealand lost Suzie Bates for one in the second over and then regular wickets fell to be all out for 168 in the 41st over.

Brooke Halliday made 39, Maddy Green 31 and Lauren Down 26.

"We did a fantastic job of restricting them. It was a good cricket wicket, we thought 260-270 was par," White Ferns captain Sophie Devine said after the game.

"We were confident at the innings break but when you lose wickets consistently, it is difficult."

Unfortunately for New Zealand, star all-rounder Amelia Kerr suffered a quad strain and is due to have a scan.

India won just their second ODI in the last eight games against New Zealand.

The second game of the three game series is at the same ground on Sunday night.
