Samoa government to establish new Transport Authority

06:52 am on 21 July 2008

The Samoa government proposes to establish a new transport authority before the change to driving on the left hand side of the road in the middle of next year.

The proposal is an amendment bill to the controversial Road Transport law ,which was passed in April after two peaceful protests march organized by the people who are against the switch.

The proposed transport authority has been well received by both sides of the house however there are calls from several opposition MPs for the government to consider reducing fees for the licensing of public transport twice a year, because of the high cost of fuel.

The amendment bill has been transferred to a parliamentary committee for further consideration before it goes back to the house for the final reading.
