Auckland Zoo is mourning the death of its oldest resident, 60-year-old chimpanzee Janie.
Janie was euthanised on Friday because of multiple health problems and natural ageing.
The chimp came to Auckland from London Zoo in 1956 with three companions to perform tea-parties for the public.
Changing public attitudes meant the tea parties stopped in 1963.
The zoo's head of life sciences, Kevin Buley, says Janie was treasured by zoo staff, and in her 57 years at the zoo she connected with millions of visitors.
