A post-mortem has been completed on the human remains found in Porirua, police say.
The remains were found near the Whitireia Park walkway in Tītahi Bay last Thursday.
Police officers have been conducting a scene examination ever since, and were working to identify the person.
On Monday, police confirmed that examination and their investigation was ongoing.
Currently, they said the death was being treated as "unexplained".
Earlier in January, there had been a 10-hectare blaze in the same location where the remains were found.
The park currently has a fire risk warning in place and its Te Onepoto Loop Track is closed between 1pm and 9pm daily.
Police told RNZ they did not believe the remains being found were connected to the fire.
Greater Wellington, who managed Whitireia Park, said the park and its tracks remained open following the discovery of the human remains.
"Greater Wellington are working with police, the Whitireia Park Board and Ngāti Toa, who intend to bless the area following the police investigation," Greater Wellington director of delivery Jack Mace said.
