Brazilian family in NZ wins deportation appeal

A Brazilian woman who fled from her Rio de Janeiro home to New Zealand after her husband was murdered has won an appeal against deportation.

The Immigration and Protection Tribunal said the woman and her two teenage children came here on visitor visas in 2011.

They stayed on illegally after their applications for refugee status and protected person status, and subsequent appeals, were declined.

The woman told the tribunal she was afraid to return to Brazil after her husband was shot outside the family home in 2004 in a suspected political killing.

The tribunal said it did not believe the family would be at risk of harm but the mother's fear was genuine.

It granted them student and work visas for nine months.
