The Catholic Church in Papua New Guinea says they have sent more workers to the area hit by an outbreak of flu and measles which has killed more than 100 people.

The Provincial Health Surveillance Unit has reported that nearly 2-thousand people have been affected by the outbreak and at least 111 people have died in a remote area of the Gulf Province.

The administrator of the Kerema diocese, Brother Sabian Misili, says half a dozen health workers have been sent to the Kanabea area to help nurses already there.

Brother Sabian says the workers have been split into four groups to tour the surrounding villages but getting there is not easy.

"We don't have the good infrastructure here, the situation of the area here is a mountainous place......road system, we don't have a road system here, so that it can make it easier for travelling,.....for people to travel here and there, it's very hard."

Brother Sabian says Kerema MP Ekis Ropenu has travelled to Port Moresby to brief government officials.
