A Canterbury police officer has been committed for trial on assault charges.

Senior Constable Michael Seque, who is based in Methven, is facing two charges assault and assault with a weapon, namely a torch.

Mr Seque pleaded not guilty in the Timaru District Court earlier this year. In another appearance on Friday morning he was committed for trial.

The area commander for mid and South Canterbury, Inspector Dave Gaskin, told Radio New Zealand News that Mr Seque is currently on sick leave.

The accused will reappear in the Timaru court on 19 October represented by Christchurch lawyer Jonathan Eaton.
