The body was found near the Roy Clements Treeway at about 6.45pm on 24 May and police believe the man was attacked.

Detective Inspector Chris Barry, speaking at Mount Roskill Police Station, said police had launched a homicide investigation.

A large team of detectives were working on the investigation and police continue to maintain a police presence in the area, he said.

"We don't believe a firearm was involved at all."

Members of the public alerted police to the body.

Barry said there was no indication the death was linked to any gang violence or activity.

The victim, a Mt Albert local, was on his way home when the incident occurred.

He reassured the community a whole team of detectives was working on the case.

There was no connection to Mount Albert Grammar School, which was nearby, he said.

Barry could not say just yet if the attack was targeted or random.

"We were notified by members of the public at about 6.55pm. At this point we think that the crime was committed shortly before that time."

He asked for people with CCTV or dashcam footage of the area to contact police.

In a statement, police said a scene guard remained in place at Roy Clements Treeway and was likely to remain in place over the coming days.

"Police are treating this matter extremely seriously and we are determined to holding the person, or persons, responsible to account. We understand residents in the area may be feeling uneasy but they will notice an increased police presence in the area. We urge anyone who feel unsafe at all, or who sees anything suspicious, to contact police immediately."

Police wanted to hear from anyone who was in the vicinity of the treeway area on Tuesday 24 May from late afternoon through to 7pm.
