Tuvalu PM says general election in August

14:14 pm on 8 February 2006

The prime minister of Tuvalu, Maatia Toafa, has called a general election for August the 3rd.

Mr Toafa came to power 18 months ago after ousting the 2002 election winner and former finance minister, Saufatu Sopoaga, in a vote of no confidence.

Two MPs are elected in seven of Tuvalu's atolls, and one MP for the eighth and smaller island of Nukulaelae.

A Radio Tuvalu journalist Melali Taape says registration of voters and candidates is yet to start.

Ms Taape explains there are no formal party groupings.

"The 15-member seats in parliament will have to be filled up by the members from the island constituencies and whoever group gets the majority of the seats will be the one in power."

Parliament will only sit for between one and two weeks before it's dissolved.
