Extreme metal is a "truly tenacious beast" says Craig Hayes in the second part of his South of Heaven extreme metal series.
New Zealand's death metal scene was established in Christchurch in the early 90s but took a toll as trends changed and bands broke up in the following years, leaving the scene in a sorry state.
But the metal scene refused to die. New local bands forged new uncompromising sounds and some bands took on a political edge, incorporating environmental, scientific and social issues into their songs.
Hayes covers bands including Forced to Submit, Malevolence and Dawn Of Azazel in the second part of South of Heaven: A history of New Zealand extreme metal.
