A paintball gun was used to blind CCTV cameras and a man who confronted street racers had his own vehicle stolen during a night of illegal racing in Hamilton.

Four people in Hamilton have been arrested after the incidents overnight.

Police were called to Pardoa Boulevard in Chartwell at about 12.50am after reports of vehicles driving dangerously, multiple vehicles doing burnouts, people partaking in anti-social behaviour and a person firing a paintball gun at a CCTV camera.

The group fled the the scene before police arrived and another incident occurred at a second location near Collins Road and Ohaupo Road.

A man was assaulted and left with injuries after confronting the group - who then stole his vehicle.

When police arrived at this location, where another camera was targeted with a paintvall gun, four people were arrested for disorderly behaviour.

Inspector Will Loughrin said a significant amount of police resources were also deployed to the area to deal with those engaged in illegal street racing.

Others in the group fled to Airport Road and were met by police.

Loughrin said police were able to disperse the group without further issue,

As well as the four arrests, 37 infringements were issued and one vehicle was impounded.

"As part of Operation Shadow, Waikato Police will continue to disrupt illegal and anti-social road behaviour," Loughrin said.

"We want to reassure the community that this behaviour will not be tolerated."

Investigations into the assault on Collins Road and Ohaupo Road were ongoing and anyone with further information was urged to contact police, referencing file number 230415/6650.
