Taxi drivers boycott Auckland Airport

20:48 pm on 13 November 2013

More than 200 taxi drivers have pulled out of Auckland Airport for 24 hours because they say unfair changes have left them scraping to earn $5 an hour.

The move on Tuesday night was in response to the banning of a driver for a month for refusing to show an airport marshal his licence.

The airport company has also caused more frustration among taxi drivers by introducing a new taxi rank, which is taking away some drivers' business.

A contractor who works for President Taxis at the airport, Manmohan Dua, helped set up the Auckland Taxi Association amid the dispute.

He says the airport hasn't responded to complaints and if nothing changes in the next few days, the association may remove all its taxis.

A spokesperson for Auckland Airport, Richard Barker, says there has been no disruption to passengers trying to get to or from the airport, and there are plenty of taxis in the region to service customers.
