The regency of Biak Numfor in Indonesia's Papua region is set to become a hub for seaweed cultivation.

Papuan villagers on the islands of Padaido and Aimando are receiving training and technical assistance from the local fisheries service to develop seaweed cultivation.

The Head of Biak Fisheries Service Effendi Igrissa says the local government has prepared around 100 hectares for a seaweed cultivation centre.

The Antara news agency reports Mr Igrissa saying the seaweed product will be directly purchased by companies from Jakarta.
