Solomon Islands parliament to resume 28th of March

08:34 am on 16 February 2011

The speaker of the Solomon Islands parliament Sir Allen Kemakeza has publicly announced that parliament will resume on March the 28th.

SIBC reports Sir Allen Kemakeza has made the announcement after receiving confirmation from the Prime Minister Danny Philip.

The opposition has welcomed the announcement of a date but says there is a risk of a budgetary crisis because any budget by the NCRA government will be defeated on the floor of parliament.

The opposition had been pushing for parliament to resume as soon as possible so it could challenge the government's majority through a motion of no confidence.

The deputy opposition leader, Mathew Wale, says the opposition is considering other options including another petition to the Governor General to move the date to the first week of March.
