A man has been jailed for almost four years for having and distributing more than 2000 sexual images of babies and children.

George Stanley Fuimaono, 27, first shared a link to files in 2022 with an overseas Covert Online Investigator.

They then referred the case to authorities here.

A search warrant was launched and multiple devices seized with photos of the sexual exploitation of children, bestiality and computer-generated files.

The Department of Internal Affairs says the depicted victims were between one and 14-years old.

A later seizure of a mobile phone helped find hundreds more objectionable publications.

Manager of DIA's Digital Child Exploitation Team, Tim Houston, said Fuimaono's devices will be destroyed.

"This sentence sends a clear message to offenders - if you engage in these abhorrent activities, you will be found and face the full force of the law," he said.

"This case is a good example of how agencies across the globe work together to apprehend these types of offenders and keep our communities safe."

Fuimaono was sentenced in the Auckland District Court to three years and 11 months in prison.
