New rally in Kiribati over China/Taiwan recognition tussle

10:10 am on 29 November 2003

Hundreds of people took to the streets in the capital of Kiribati on Friday in support of the Government's decision to recognise Taiwan.

The news director at Radio Kiribati, Ross Terubea, says the rally appeared to be larger than a protest involving about 300 people in Tarawa on Monday.

Those at that rally criticised the Government for abandoning the One China policy and opening links with Taiwan.

The Government move has upset China which has called on Kiribati to abandon relations with Taiwan and threatened to pull out of Kiribati if this is not done.

An announcement is expected at any time from the Chinese Embassy about its position.
