A 25-year-old will appear in court this morning after police were called to a man pointing what was believed to be a firearm at people from his car in Dunedin's Octagon last night.

Officers were alerted about 9pm and a police dog team was dispatched to track the vehicle.

It was located on George Street in Central Dunedin.

"[The] vehicle failed to stop and low speed pursuit initiated," acting Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said.

"The vehicle turned onto Bath Street which is currently closed for roadworks and had nowhere else to go."

The driver was arrested and breath tested. He returned a level of 600mcg of alcohol per litre of breath - more than twice the legal limit of 250.

The man was held overnight in the Dunedin Central police station, Bond said.

He will appear in Dunedin District Court on charges of drink driving, failing to stop and presenting a firearm-like object.
