Australian MPs are justifying raising terrorism alert level to high following the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old suspect in Melbourne last night.
Radio New Zealand is reporting that Abdul Numan Haider was shot dead last night after stabbing two officers from the Joint Counter Terrorism team outside the Endeavor Hills Police Station. Both officers were rushed to hospital and needed surgery.
Abdul Numan Haider was under investigation by police and had had his passport cancelled, Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Ken Lay said.
Mr Haider, whose family are from Afghanistan, was also alleged to have been seen last week with an Islamic State flag. Though he had past associations with the radcial Islamic group Al-Furqan, it is understood that he had recently moved away from the group.
