Changed political landscape ahead of Fiji polls

15:04 pm on 26 April 2017

Fiji heads towards elections next year with new players in the opposition and voters still recovering from the devastation of Cyclone Winston.

Sodelpa's new leader Sitiveni Rabuka and the defection of Pio Tikoduadua from the governing Fiji First to the National Federation Party are among changes in the political landscape.

Another major change is the move of the former NFP president Tupou Draunidalo to a new political grouping Hope, which is in the process of seeking registration.

A scholar of Fiji politics Vijay Naidu told Sally Round the changes may erode indigenous Fijian support for Frank Bainimarama's Fiji First which won a landslide victory in 2014.
