Samoa election results coming in slowly

15:01 pm on 5 March 2011

Results are slowly being announced at Samoa's electoral office for today's general election.

Voters have today voted for 47 candidates for the country's 49 seat parliament, after two MPs were elected unopposed.

Only one seat has so far completed provisional counting, Faleata East.

In that seat, the opposition Tautua Samoa candidate, Aveau Niko Palamo, a former Manu Samoa rugby coach, has beaten the HRPP candidate.

More results are expected in a few hours.

The police say election day has so far been uneventful.
