The main road into the suburb of Korokoro near Petone is closed after a slip has come down, blocking both lanes.

The slip is on Korokoro Road, near No 14.

Hutt City Council is asking people to avoid the area and find alternative routes.

"We are working as quickly as we can to respond to this new event, and will provide further updates as soon as they are available," the council said in a statement on Facebook.

It is the latest in a series of slips and landslides that have caused significant problems in the Wellington region over the last two months.

By last week 670 had occurred and Wellington City Council said 19 people whose houses were affected were still in temporary accommodation or staying with friends and family.

Also last week, on the Kāpiti Coast a slip closed the coastal road between Pukerua Bay and Paekākāriki.

Waka Kotahi said that stretch of road could be out of action for several weeks because the site was highly unstable.

Councils in the region have asked residents for patience and understanding while crews do their best to piece roads and hillsides back together.
