Canterbury District Health Board said benthic cyanobacteria was in the river near Teviotdale and may also be in other parts of the river.

It warned the public contact with the algae can cause health problems in people and animals, and they should stay away.

Canterbury Regional Council said it was monitoring the river and would advise when the water quality had improved.
