The Automobile Association is worried a shift to using hands-free cellphone devices while driving, due to a ban on hand-held phones, will give motorists a false sense of security.
From Sunday, people caught breaching a new road rule banning hand-held cell phone use will face a fine of $80 and 20 demerit points.
Retailers have been reporting strong sales of hands-free car kits in the lead-up to the ban.
But the AA says any conversation on the phone while driving puts motorists at risk and they should not use their phones at all.
