Papua New Guinea hospital patient stabbed to death in surgical ward bed

15:24 pm on 4 March 2004

In an apparent revenge attack, a hospital patient in the Papua New Guinea city of Lae has been stabbed to death in his bed.

Media reports say nurses on the surgical ward at the Angau Memorial Hospital raised the alarm but by the time security guards arrived, the patient had died from multiple stab wounds.

A hospital spokesperson says the alleged attacker later surrendered to police at hospital reception.

Police allege the dead man was part of a gang which conducted an armed hold-up last week during which a man was shot and killed.

The hospital attacker was believed to be the brother of the man shot during the robbery.
