Little hope held for trapped miners

17:28 pm on 18 June 2010

More than 70 miners in Colombia have been trapped by an explosion in a coalmine.

An official says there is practically no hope of finding any of them alive.

Three bodies have been recovered. Sixteen miners are known to be dead.

The BBC reports the explosion happened at the San Fernando mine in Amaga, Antioquia province, at 10pm on Wednesday, during a shift change.

Five workers died in the same mine during a flood two years ago.

Colombia is one of the world's biggest coal exporters.
