Grafton Bridge fines total $124,000 in five days

15:10 pm on 7 December 2009

The Automobile Association is calling for better signs on Grafton Bridge in Auckland after drivers received more than $124,000 in fines in five days.

Since October, only buses have been allowed to use the bridge on weekdays between 7am to 7pm.

Auckland City Council says 831 drivers of private vehicles were fined last week for crossing it.

But the Automobile Association says traffic signals and signs around Grafton Bridge are inadequate. It is to meet the council to ensure bus lanes are properly signposted.

The AA says drivers who use the bridge to get to the nearby Auckland Hospital in an emergency, will likely have their fines cancelled.
