Court order obtained in Sri Lanka by Fonterra

Fonterra says a district court in Sri Lanka has issued an order to prevent a newspaper from re-publishing claims that its milk powder contains vegetable oils.

Earlier this week, The Beacon newspaper in the capital, Colombo, published an article and editorial claiming Fonterra's imported milk products did not contain full cream, but some sort of vegetable oil, following some analysis from a local academic.

The newspaper said it would print another article providing more detail.

Fonterra has accused a local company with vested interests of spreading what it describes as "baseless" claims, and took court action to prevent the publication.

It was also seeking damages from the newspaper.

Fonterra says none of its products in Sri Lanka contain any pork, poultry or vegetable fats, and the products meet New Zealand and international standards.
