A weak but shallow earthquake has shaken parts of the lower North Island awake this morning.

The 4.1-magnitude earthquake at 6.56am was centred 25km south of Paraparaumu, at a depth of 5km.
It was felt by hundreds of people in the Wellington region and as far north as Palmerston North.
