American Samoa's Port Administration Department has bought a second tugboat, ensuring it meets US Coast Guard requirements.
The Coast Guard had given the Port of Pago Pago until the middle of next month to comply.
The Port Administration director Taimalelagi Dr Claire Poumele said the tugboat would be departing soon from the US mainland.
The administration has a five-member crew, currently in Alabama, to sail the tugboat to the territory via the Panama Canal.
The tugboat, which was built in 1983, has been refurbished over the last year.
