The race for Nelson's mayoralty is on, pitting the incumbent, Rachel Reese - the city's first female mayor - against fellow long-serving councillor Pete Rainey.
Mr Rainey has formally announced his candidacy for the mayoralty.
The pair were first elected to the council as part of the same ticket in 2007, but have since clashed on occasion.
