Petition launched in American Samoa to dump new hospital fees

19:10 pm on 8 December 2005

In American Samoa a petition is being circulated calling for the Governor Togiola Tulafono to abandon newly set hospital fees.

The organisers have said they want as many as 5,000 signatures on the petition.

One of the initiators says it is an effort by a group of concerned individuals to get the Hospital Authority Board to listen to the public.

Copies of the petition were circulated at today's Senate hearing on the fees.

The petitioners say that people are not going to the hospital for treatment, because they cannot afford the fees and this is posing a risk to their health.
