Indonesian designer takes out top WOW award

The Indonesian designer Rinaldy Yunardi has taken out the Supreme Award at the World of Wearable Arts in Wellington last night.

Mr Yunardi's piece Encapsulate sees a lycra-clad model wearing silver boots engulfed inside what looks like two separated halves of a black egg, illuminated by sparkling LED lights.

It beat out more than 100 entries from 122 designers hailing from 13 countries.

The runner-up award went to USA designer Grace DuVal for her piece, Refuse Refuge.

Elsewhere, Dutch artist Saar Snoek took out the Aotearoa Section award with Human Nature.

Wellington's Fifi Colston won the Weta Workshop Science Fiction award with her piece,The Organ Farmer.

British designers Maria Tsopanaki and Dimitri Mavinis won the Illumination Illusion section with The Spirit of Waitomo.

Also from the United Kingdom, Adam McAlavey's piece, Cube, won the Red section - as well as taking out the Invited Artisan Award.

And Rinaldy Yunardi took out a further category - the Avant-Garde section - with his piece, Cosmos.

Annie Temmink won the New Entrant award with her piece Daisy, while Wellington's Kate Fisher scored the Student Innovation award with Does This Suit Me?

Grace Duval's Refuse Refuge - the overall runner-up - won the Sustainability award, while Americans Ben Gould and Dawn Mostow claimed the prize for Wearable Technology.

The New Zealand design award was won by Auckland's Carolyn Gibson with her piece The Seeker.

The awards were announced by the actress Antonia Prebble in front of a capacity crowd of nearly 4000 at TSB Arena last night.

The festival will run for another two weeks and ends on 8 October.
