India have consigned the Black Caps to a third heavy consecutive loss in Mt Maunganui, taking an unassailable lead in the ODI series.

India needed 244 runs to win the third one day cricket international after the Black Caps' sub-par batting performance.

After winning the toss and opting to bat, openers Martin Guptill and Colin Munroe didn't last long, making 13 and 7 respectively.

Skipper Kane Williamson was the third wicket to fall, out for 28.

Ross Taylor was the rock of the Black Caps innings making 93, while Tom Latham made 51.

But batsman continued to fall at regular intervals around them and the home side were all out after 49 overs.

Indian bowler Mohammed Shami took three wickets including the prized scalp of Taylor courtesy of a caught behind.

The visitors only lost three wickets in their run chase at Bay Oval.

Rohit Sharma top scored with 62 before being dismissed by Mitchell Santner. Trent Boult picked up the wickets of Shikhar Dhawan and captain Virat Kohli for 60.

The Black Caps will be looking for answers quickly, with two matches left in the five-game series.
