Fresh fruit and vegetables, groceries, takeaway meals, and soft drinks drove a 0.7 percent rise for the month.

Meat and poultry was the only food group to fall in price.

Stats NZ says dairy products, notably yoghurt, were sharply higher, as was cooking oil during the month.

The annual rate to May rose to 6.8 percent from 6.4 percent in April.

Food price inflation hit 7.6 percent in March, its fastest pace in 11 years.
