South Korea hopes to renew fishing accord with French Polynesia

12:26 pm on 10 December 2009

South Korea has approached French Polynesia in a bid to renew a bilateral fishing accord.

The arrangement had been set up in 1980 but was abandoned in 2000.

The fresh approach was made by South Korea's deputy fisheries minister who is in Tahiti for the meeting of the Western and Central Pacific Tuna Commission.

A statement issued by the French Polynesian presidency says suggestions have been made for contacts to be re-established via South Korea's embassy in Fiji.

The Papeete conference is to discuss ways to halt the decline in fish stocks.

French Polynesia has one of the biggest exclusive economic zones.
